Men's Hockey History

Team History 

The modern Carleton Ravens men’s hockey program has been active since joining the OUA in the 2007-08 season. Before going dormant for 33 years between 1974-2007, the Ravens played in pre-OUA leagues such as the Ottawa Intercollegiate Hockey League, Ottawa-St. Lawrence Conference, and the Quebec-Ontario Athletic Association (QOAA). Their most prominent pre-OUA period came in the late 1960s and early 1970s, including a QOAA Eastern Division Championship. This era of Ravens hockey featured brilliant seasons by many Ravens Hall-of-Famers including Wayne Small, whose Ravens goals and single-season points records still stand over 50 years since they were set.  

After the program folded in 1974, the efforts to revive the Ravens were spearheaded by Carleton graduate Paul Correy. His dedication was massively influential in re-launching the Ravens as a club team in 1991. Correy would continue to lead all managing, coaching, and fundraising efforts until the Ravens received varsity status ahead of the 2007-08 season, along with the completion of the now Advanced Capital Ice House facility. His unrelenting contributions to the program are remembered by his #12 banner hanging next to the scoreboard in the Ice House. 

In the modern era, the Ravens have experienced periods of great regular-season success, finishing at the top of the OUA standings on two separate occasions. They have won three OUA Bronze Medals and have appeared at the National Championship Tournament three times. Carleton has seen many former players graduate into professional careers in Europe and North America. Most notably, former Ravens head coach Marty Johnson has found his way onto an NHL bench as an assistant with the Winnipeg Jets.  

The Ravens also have a strong list of former players who have experienced playing at the highest levels of international hockey. At the 2026 Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics, former Raven Jason Seed suited up for Team Italy and faced off against the world’s best players. Former forward Madoka Suzuki has represented Japan internationally at the D1B 2022 IIHF World Championships, and the aforementioned Wayne Small competed in the 1977-78 Spengler Cup tournament with Swiss club HC Davos. 

Currently, the Ravens play in the highly competitive OUA East, where they seek to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2023. 

Conference Championships 

Carleton Ravens men’s hockey has never won an OUA championship. The Ravens have accomplished two OUA Regular Season 1st place finishes in 2014 and 2020. 

National Championships 

Carleton Ravens men’s hockey has never won a national championship. They have appeared in three national championship tournaments in 2014, 2016, and 2019. 

Team Record Book 

The Carleton Ravens men’s hockey record book features statistics and records dating back to the 2007-08 OUA season. However, Ravens Hall of Famer Wayne Small takes center stage in this archive as the Ravens all-time goals leader. A Raven from 1968 to 1971, Small’s 83 goals over his three-year Carleton career still stand alone as the most ever. He also holds the record for most points in a single season with 63 in 1968-69.
